The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
